Fort Augustus
Fort Augustus is a small village at the start of Loch Ness and it is where the Caledonian Canal ends. The canal flows through the heart of the village with five locks allowing boats to go in or out of Loch Ness.
Although the population is only around 400 people this is one of the businest villages in Loch Ness and perhaps the Highlands region of Scotland. There is a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants scattered throughout the village.
The two main restaurants and bars are the Bothy and Lock Inn which are both on the Canalside, these places offer the chance to enjoy a meal or drink while having a view of the canal. There is often live music on the weekends in the summer months, mostly traditional Celtic music and this usually creates a good atmosphere.
The main attractions of the village include a number of walks around the village (ideal in the summer months) also there are several boat trips on Loch Ness which leave several times on a daily basis.
